Bridges across the country required repairs and maintenance works following the flooding in mid-July, public works and transport minister François Bausch has said. 

Luxembourg on 14 and 15 July experienced historic flooding that caused more than an estimated €120m in damage to property across the country.

Public infrastructure did not escape the destruction and around a third of the 217 bridges in the grand duchy had to be cleaned or repaired in the wake of the natural disaster.

Bausch confirmed that six bridges needed repairs, 24 bridges required maintenance works and another 47 had to be cleared of mud and debris.

Several bridges were closed in precaution, Bausch said in answer to a , to allow for damage to be assessed once the water had receded.

“The bridges of the national road network are planned and built following the latest norms and recognised technical standards, so that they meet the safety requirements foreseen,” Bausch said. “Every bridge is checked in regular intervals, and the necessary maintenance is carried out.”
