On 5 December, a strike by French railway workers will cause major disruption to rail traffic between Lorraine and Luxembourg.

Cross-border workers making their daily commute between France and Luxembourg will have to be patient this Thursday 5 December. A national strike by French railway workers, organised to protest against the dismantling of Fret SNCF, will have a severe impact on the Luxembourg-Thionville-Metz line. However, traffic on the Luxembourg-Bascharage-Sanem-Rodange-Longwy line will be maintained.

According to the traffic plan published by the SNCF, only a few trains will be running at peak times. Between 5.33am and 8.03am, seven trains will run between Metz and Luxembourg, compared with 11 in normal times. However, no trains will be available between 9am and 4pm. The return journey will not be any easier: between 3.58pm and 6.28pm, only seven trains will leave Luxembourg station for France, instead of the usual 12. After this time, there will be no service at all.

The disruption will also affect TGV services between Luxembourg and France. SNCF advises users to check its website regularly for updated timetable information.

“If you have any teleworking allowance left, now’s the time to burn off your last few days,” posted the Association des voyageurs du TER Metz-Luxembourg on X (formerly Twitter) this morning. Cross-border commuters have been warned.
