Groundbreaking maths training programme Magrid was the winner of the 2020 World Summit Award’s learning and education category, announced last week.

Magrid uses language-neutral, grid-based exercises to remove barriers and help young learners in cycle 1 build the fundamentals of mathematic knowledge.

Founder Tahereh Pazouki told Delano in February that her solution was developed to tackle the learning challenges in Luxembourg, where over 65% of students are being taught in a language which is not their native tongue. “These students are at risk of obtaining a poor maths foundation and lagging behind native speakers,” she said.

Magrid, which is one of 35 active startups at the University of Luxembourg’s incubator, was the first Luxembourg company to be shortlisted for the contest.

Pranjul Shah, University of Luxembourg incubator manager, said: “Magrid's success has made all of us at the Incubator very proud. Especially, the mentors who supported Tahereh in her entrepreneurial journey. Magrid is an excellent example of how the University is fulfilling its third mission of creating socio-economic development for the country.”

The Magrid programme was rolled out to all Luxembourg primary schools in March. Pazouki and her team are now working on the next stage of the programme designed for cycle 2.
