About 20 people attended, including a handful of native Luxembourgers who support the former real estate developer and TV personality.

“President Trump was elected first, second and third to restore jobs to the middle class,” James O’Neal, president of the group, said at the event.

“Jobs and opportunities have been eviscerated. Even his security advisor Flynn said that the first, second and third most important security issues are bringing jobs, jobs, and jobs. There is tremendous talk in newspapers about foreign policy issues, but Trump’s real mandate came from the middle class; a lot of them would normally vote Democrat. They believe in his message; they believe he can deliver in restoring prosperity to all Americans not just Wall Street,” he stated.

Focus on middle class

Richard Tippett, head of the Association of the United States Army’s Luxembourg branch, agreed: “I would really enjoy for president Trump to focus on the middle class and bring people off of food stamps and make America strong again. We have too much debt which is unsustainable, but the poverty levels are too high as well, so it’s kind of like a vicious cycle.”

Jorge Del Rio, a tax lawyer who has lived in Luxembourg for the past nine years, stated that the most important policy issue was “economic reform with regard to corporate tax rates at the federal level.”

Fréderic Becker, a French-German living in Luxembourg, added: “first he has to fight against unemployment. Then the new world order, like we had with this interventionism, that has to stop. Then all the places like Syria, where it would have been wise to do something. The policy against Russia needs to be changed: they should come closer again and not always seek confrontation.”

Wait before judging

Asked what they would say to the global protests against president Trump, everyone had the same reply: give Trump a chance.

Alain Feyereisen, a Luxembourger Trump supporter, argued: “He has not yet done anything and already people are against him. That is not normal. First he has to do his work and then you can judge him.”

O’Neal said: “Let’s be pragmatic about this, let’s be calm about this and see what happens.”

And Del Rio gave this advice to the protestors who rallied against the new president in several cities in the US and around the world: “They should enjoy themselves and be safe. They have the right to do it as long as they don’t violate any laws, have fun and be safe.”
