The broadcaster had refused to air two recorded party announcements from Déi Lénk and one from Volt because they were in French and their guidelines had stated all political broadcasts should be in Luxembourgish.

Alia issued issued a written request saying that language could not be used as a criteria for refusing to broadcast. It has since told RTL that a “very large majority of parties presenting a list for the European elections have agreed to accept the use of French, alongside the Luxembourg language.” In a press release published on Thursday evening, RTL announced it would broadcast the French messages with immediate effect.

The matter came to public attention when Déi Lénk leader David Wagner submitted an urgent parliamentary question on the matter. Media minister Xavier Bettel replied on Friday that it was not a governmental matter.
