Since 2013, Luxembourg has had a coalition government, comprised of the DP, LSAP and Déi Gréng.
One of the things that makes this election different is that it is the first since the introduction of the new law on acquiring Luxembourg nationality. Entering into force on 1 April 2017, the law lowered the residency threshold from seven to five years and introduced a few other measures.
The number of people acquiring Luxembourg nationality has risen steadily in recent years. In 2017, some 9,030 people acquired the nationality, up from, 7,142 in 2016, according to the justice ministry figures. Although numbers are not yet available for 2018, it is expected to continue in this upward trend.
Another change, this time to the gender balance of candidates, is the introduction of new rules on subsidising political parties, which penalises parties whose candidate lists contain less than 40% of an under-represented sex.The figures below were published by our sister publication, Paperjam, following a Monday press conference with the central office for elections and government IT department, CTIE.
