As of Monday morning, the 35 year old was number 95 in the ATP world singles rankings. His career high was 21st playing singles and 74th playing doubles, both reached in 2017.

But, according to the Tennis World:

“It has been a terrible year so far for Muller”.

The tennis news site said that Muller just dropped from 60th to 95th place after:

“he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Wimbledon second round.

“He had reached quarter-finals last year, after defeating the Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. His run had ended against Marin Cilic in five sets. Muller also reached 2008 US Open quarter-finals, losing to Roger Federer.”

Muller has represented Luxembourg in the Davis Cup 16 times, and represented the grand duchy in the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Muller said that he would only comment on why he’s retiring after his final match, so that he can concentrate on his game and enjoy the rest of the season.

Following the announcement, Luxembourg’s prime minister, Xavier Bettel, tweeted: “Thank you Gilles Muller for the great moments we’ve had with you and good luck for the next step.”
