Over 1,500 respondents from Luxembourg and the greater region took part in the survey that announced the CFL Group as the most attractive employer in 2021, followed by Luxair (most attractive employer in 2020), Banque et Caisse d'Epargne de l'Etat Luxembourg, Post Luxembourg and Cargolux, in that order.

Even in times of covid, when job security has been of concern, the attractive salaries and benefits (79%) in the grand duchy continue to be the major reason for its attractiveness. Job security was the second reason (74%), similar to 2019 and 2020 results. Together, these two indicators represent determinant factors of attractiveness, especially among 25–54-year-olds.

Work-life balance (69%) and an amiable work environment (66%) come third and fourth place, respectively, and are particularly desired by women, while the fifth main priority concerned the financial viability of their future employer (57%).

When categorised according to blue- and white-collar jobs, employees share the same perceptions in the same order, although with varying percentages. Among the 16 indicators analysed, respondents were least concerned with the very good reputation of companies (35%), its use of latest technologies (32%) or strong management (30%).

Job shifting trends

The trend of job shifting is also captured in the report, with more younger employees changing employers or intending to do so in the first half of 2021.

About 6% of employees changed employers in the last half of 2020, and another 12% of employees intend to do the same in first half of 2021. The underlying reason for this shift is linked to career progression (67%) and a pleasant work atmosphere (77%). However, this is not indicative of the overall trend, as 96% of employees remained with their employer in the past 6 months. In the white-collar world, 11% of employees intend to switch jobs in the first half of 2021.

Attractiveness by sector

When it comes to the most attractive sectors, almost all sectors in Luxembourg are even more attractive compared to 2020, despite the covid pandemic. The logistics and transportation sector tops the list again with an attractiveness rate of 44%, two points higher than the previous year and 18 points more than the finance sector. The reason for this is mostly due to the well-perceived reputation of logistics and transportation companies, in addition to the financial reward and the job security it offers. About three of these companies are included in the top five.

Covid effect

As expected, telework has become an attractiveness criterion, ranking ninth place. The introduction of telework affected about 50% of the workforce, who had the flexibility to work remotely or at the office. Due to the nature of certain activities, about 28% did not have this possibility and about 5% did not have the choice to work from home.

26% of respondents, compared to 39% in the EU, saw changes in their professional activity due to covid-19, either by more or fewer working hours, or lower income and job loss, to mention a few. The crisis also introduced a higher level of employee loyalty for the 47% who say their employer’s response to the pandemic endeared them to the company. About 9% say they are less loyal.
