The Customs and Excise Agency discovered 508kg of cocaine during an inspection of a freight shipment at the Cargo Center of Luxembourg Airport in February. It’s the country’s largest drug seizure in air freight to date.

The grand duchy’s customs agency on 3 March 2025 announced that it had discovered 508kg of cocaine during the inspection of an air freight shipment containing tapioca in the cargo area of Luxembourg Airport in February.

“The goods were transported on a cargo plane coming from Brazil, and the unusual transport route attracted the attention of the officials and prompted a thorough inspection of the shipment. During the inspection, the officials were able to identify irregularities that confirmed the suspicion of hidden contraband,” said a press release from the agency. “The cocaine was cleverly hidden in 3.6 tons of cornstarch and distributed across five pallets in order to be smuggled unnoticed into Europe. This discovery marks the largest drug seizure in the area of air freight in Luxembourg to date.”

The seized drugs are worth around €100m, noted the Customs and Excise Agency, which was supported by the grand ducal police. Investigations continue under the direction of the public prosecutor's office, in cooperation with the customs agency and the police.
