Expatistan is a crowdsourced site, where users self-report what they actually paid at the till for a standard set of goods and services. The firm has said that it filters out anomalous entries. The company reported 2,356 “valid prices” for Luxembourg are in its database.
According to this month’s edition, the Grand Duchy had the 3rd most expensive local cheese (€11 for 500g) and 5th most expensive taxis (€28 for a 8km trip on a business day) in the world, as well as the 3rd most expensive laundry detergent (€11 for a 3 litre container) in western Europe. At the same time, the country has the cheapest gas (€1.12 per litre) in western Europe.
The firm calculated that, compared to Luxembourg, the cost of living in Zurich is roughly 52%, New York 35%, Singapore 16% and Dublin 8% more expensive. Seattle and Tel Aviv have about the same cost of living as the Grand Duchy’s capital, Expatistan said. On the other hand, Toronto is 5%, Frankfurt and Manchester both 10%, Brussels 14%, Berlin 19% and Beijing 33% cheaper.
