Considering the current infection rate and Omicron variant an “emergency”, the government wants to hold a discussion with deputies. This would allow it, , to “draw the necessary conclusions” in order to launch if needed a legal procedure to create a legislative base for the introduction of mandatory inoculation. 

The chamber of deputies, on Christmas Eve, had adopted a motion on the subject, arguing that vaccination was not only safe and efficient to avoid transmitting and developing stronger covid-19 symptoms, but that it also represented an act of solidarity and responsibility towards fellow citizens and healthcare professionals. 

The MPs had asked the government to observe decisions taken in neighbouring and EU countries, as well as submit a request for a debate on mandatory vaccination. 

Currently, 5,894 active infections have been counted in the grand duchy, 486 of which were confirmed on the day of 27 December alone. 65 patients are currently hospitalised for covid-19, 19 of which are in the ICU. So far, since the beginning of the pandemic, 910 people have lost their life to the virus in Luxembourg, while 1,049,153 vaccine shots have been administered in total over the past 12 months. 

Bettel, in his letter, promised that the government would share a summary which would allow deputies to form their arguments ahead of the debate.
