Australia has named Angus Campbell as its next ambassador to Belgium, with additional responsibilities as ambassador to the European Union (EU), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) and Luxembourg. on Friday 17 January 2025, this appointment underscores Australia’s strategic focus on strengthening international partnerships with key global and regional organisations.
Campbell, a decorated military leader, served as chief of the defence force from 6 July 2018 to 10 July 2024. He is a recipient of the distinguished service cross (DSC) and an officer of the Order of Australia (AO). Before his tenure as chief of the defence force, he commanded Operation Sovereign Borders starting in September 2013 and was subsequently appointed chief of army in May 2015.
Australia’s engagement with the EU spans cooperation on pressing global issues, including trade, climate change, human rights, energy and the preservation of international norms. The two parties also collaborate in the Indo-Pacific region, working to uphold peace, stability and prosperity through a strong commitment to international law.
Australia’s minister for foreign affairs, Penny Wong, reaffirmed in a statement the country’s commitment to finalising a free trade agreement with the EU, emphasising its importance in advancing national interests and bolstering economic ties. She also highlighted that Campbell’s military expertise is anticipated to enhance defence and security cooperation with Nato and other European partners.
Campbell succeeds Caroline Millar, who served as ambassador to the EU, Nato, Belgium and Luxembourg since 2021.
