Kirchberg now has a new home for migrants. They are welcomed by the Luxembourg government in a building designed by Fabeck Architectes, who paid particular attention to its integration into the Grünewald district.

The Public Building Administration (ABP) asked Fabeck Architectes to design the new hostel for migrants in Kirchberg. The people who are housed here have had to flee their countries in the hope of finding a safe haven and a better life in Luxembourg. The Luxembourg state aimed to provide them with a home, even if it is only temporary.

While there are several reception centres for refugees in the country, this project is characterised by a strong integration linked to its location. The building is being constructed in Kirchberg, on land in the Grünewald area in the heart of the city. To further encourage the integration of these new arrivals into neighbourhood life, the Fonds Kirchberg has decided to install a permanent “Quartier Stuff” (neighbourhood living room) on the ground floor of the building. The plot also has the advantage of being located next to the hospital, which means that help can be provided in the immediate vicinity.

In order to be able to build quickly, the client opted for a wooden building with a high degree of prefabrication. It took just one week to erect a complete floor. The plan is highly rational, which also reduced design and construction times. To optimise costs and interior space, the second stairwell required was placed on the outside, in a recess in the façade. The structure remains highly flexible, thanks to its post-and-slab construction and series of vertical ducts. In the future, the structure could be adapted to accommodate flats of different sizes.
