If you are in search of fresh, locally sourced produce, then look no further than Terra, a community-supported agriculture cooperative based in Eich. Founded in 2014 by Pit Reichert, Sophie Pixius and Marko Anyfandakis, Terra grows a wide variety of pesticide-free vegetables--including broccoli, oregano, carrots, lettuce, garlic and tomatoes.
Instead of buying vegetables by the kilo, residents subscribe to a membership where they receive a weekly basket of eight to ten in-season vegetables between the end of April and December. Members can pick up their baskets at the vegetable garden in Eich on Tuesday evenings or at place Léon XIII in Bonnevoie on Saturday mornings. Harvests are subject to the climate, meaning the quality and quantity of vegetables supplied may vary from year to year.
Reichert, who is also head gardener at Terra, says buying locally sourced vegetables from shops can be expensive, as they need to recover a margin from their sales. “By going local you can cut out the middleman and buy directly from the producer,” he said.
Terra is in close contact with its 230 members, most of whom reside in Luxembourg City. The cooperative also organises regular visits to the vegetable garden and runs an apprenticeship programme for those who want hands-on experience of running a garden enterprise.
